Nutaryuk is a contemporary solo for late elementary students, inspired by the quiet beauty of winter and the feeling of fresh snow. The title comes from an Inuit word meaning “fresh snow,” and that image was at the center of the writing process for this piece. The goal was to create something that sounds modern and sophisticated while still feeling very accessible for younger students.

The music leaves plenty of space, with calm, modal harmonies that feel reflective—much like a cold winter morning before the world wakes up. The right-hand melody drifts gently above the accompaniment, almost like snowflakes falling during the first snowfall of the season. Because the textures remain clear and uncluttered, students can focus on tone, balance, and shaping long musical lines.
