My-Melodies is a small independent publishing house based out of Lawrence, KS specializing in educational piano literature.

Our goal is to make piano lessons more fun and more engaging for students by providing creative and unique compositions for students to learn from. We are strong believers that if students have fun at the piano, that will lead to more practice time at home for their own enjoyment which in turn will make them into better musicians and stronger pianists.

The company motto on the back of each book is “Good Music Doesn’t Have to Be Hard to Play". Those are words we try to live by and keep in mind for each and every composition that we publish. We consider ourselves piano teachers first and foremost. Having that experience working with students of all different ages and skill levels everyday single day allows us to see and hear the needs of our students.

We saw that our students wanted more modern, more fun sounding pieces to play for their family and friends while also being approachable for younger players. That’s a tall order and is very difficult to find. So we started writing the pieces ourselves and making these pieces custom-tailored around our students needs and interests first.

The Five-Finger Series is all crafted around doing interesting things with five-finger positions and pentascales which makes them both easy to learn and fun to play. Many of the pieces use different five-finger positions in each hand which compositionally opens the possibilities to so many more colors and sounds than traditional five-finger positions. We’ve found that students pick these up very quickly and are off to the races in no time.

It was also important to us to offer each book with play-along tracks which were professionally recorded by real musicians. So many books currently on the market use MIDI recordings, but I was never satisfied with those. The feel of a real drummer and bass player working together can’t be replicated by MIDI. Giving students the option to play along with professional musicians helps with their sense of time, rhythm and all of the small nuances that students can only get from playing with other musicians.
